Mass Spectrometer Advanced Control Software Course Isodat (Feb. 21-23, 2012)

The instructors for the training course are Research Scientist Gilles St-Jean and, the designer of Isodat as well as the Software Manager for Thermo Fisher Scientific, Holger Jeglinski.

This is the second course given for Isodat users. The course covers many aspects of Isodat versions 2.0 to 3.0, teaching users to: add their own devices, tie them to Methods and Sequences, and write more advanced Scripting programs (ISL). Course size is limited to 10-15 attendees.

Course participants will receive Isodat, Version 3.0 with the latest Service Pack.

Prerequisites:

1. Must have at least two years of experience with your Thermo Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS) system.
2. Must have some experience with either (a) or (b):
a. Procedural programming such as BASIC, Pascal, C or FORTRAN,
b. Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) such as Visual Basic, Visual C++ or C#.
3. If you have no programming experience, we suggest you buy a book such as “SAMS Teach Yourself C in 24 Hours” (actually 24 lessons); SAMS Publishing, 2000. Or, check your local book store for a similar book. You will need software to practice the lessons. It does not require the latest versions. For example, an old copy of Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 is more than sufficient to do the lessons.
4. Bring your Laptop with Windows XP loaded with all Service Packs (SP3) and Patches installed (not Vista). If you have a new laptop with VISTA or Windows 7 you can do one of three things. Ask your IT people which option is best for you:
a. Make a dual-boot system with XP and VISTA or Win 7 on the same HD,
b. Buy a second HD and set it up with Win XP,
c. Get a bootable external drive (e.g. USB bootable drive) with Windows XP on it.
5. Make sure you have one free USB port. If not, bring a ‘powered’ USB hub to ensure that your laptop can supply enough power to your mouse, external HD, memory sticks and the USB-COM cable that will be supplied for the exercises. By using your own computer, you will have access to the course work for future reference.
